Rio Tinto has halted all mining operations at its Kennecott site in Utah following the death of a contract employee on Thursday.
The fatal incident occurred at the Bingham Canyon Mine, prompting an immediate suspension of both surface and underground activities to allow for a full investigation.
“We are devastated by the loss of our colleague, and our heartfelt sympathies are with their family, friends, teammates, and everyone in the Kennecott community,” said Rio Tinto Chief Executive Simon Trott.
The company is currently working alongside relevant authorities and contractor partners to conduct a thorough review of the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
