The Australian Communications and Media Authority announced that radio broadcasters must now explicitly disclose the use of AI-generated synthetic voices.
Marking the first time artificial intelligence has been codified into broadcasting standards, the new rules require stations to inform audiences whenever a "robot host" is used for news or regularly scheduled programming.
The update, integrated into the Commercial Radio Code of Practice 2026, specifically mandates "special care" during school-run windows (8:00 AM–9:00 AM and 3:00 PM–4:00 PM) to protect younger listeners.
ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin noted that while AI offers immense innovative potential, "listeners want greater transparency."
The regulations are set to take official effect on July 1, ensuring that the airwaves keep pace with rapidly evolving technology.
