Gambia told the International Court of Justice that Myanmar deliberately targeted the Rohingya Muslim minority for destruction in a landmark genocide case.
The hearings mark the first full genocide case heard by the court in more than a decade.
Gambian Justice Minister Dawda Jallow said the Rohingya were peaceful people whose lives were devastated by violence.
They have been targeted for destruction.
Dawda Jallow said.
Myanmar has denied them their dream, in fact it turned their lives into a nightmare.
Dawda Jallow said.
Gambia filed the case in 2019, accusing Myanmar of committing genocide in Rakhine state.
Myanmar has denied the allegations, saying its 2017 military campaign was a legitimate counterterrorism operation.
More than 730,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh in 2017, reporting killings, mass rape and arson.
A United Nations fact-finding mission concluded the military campaign included genocidal acts.
Rohingya refugees said they hope the case will deliver justice and global recognition of their suffering.
