Family and domestic violence offending has surged to record levels across Australia, with new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealing an 8% increase in police proceedings over the 2024–25 financial year.
The spike—the largest annual rise since national reporting commenced in 2019–20—saw the offender rate climb to 403 per 100,000 people, involving 97,800 individuals.
ABS head of crime and justice statistics, Samantha Hall, noted that the vast majority of these offenders were male (78%) with a median age of 35.
The trend stands in stark contrast to broader crime figures; while the total number of offenders nationally rose by only 1%, youth offending saw a 5% decline.
New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria led this downward trend in youth crime, recording substantial drops in offenders aged 10 to 17.
