An American known as “Dark Bank” has been extradited to France over allegations he laundered hundreds of millions of euros in cryptocurrency tied to drug trafficking and cyberattacks between 2019 and 2023.

Hafiz Huzefa Ismail is accused of orchestrating a network that converted small-denomination cash collected from criminal groups into digital assets, before exchanging the funds back into cash through international accomplices.

The scheme allegedly relied on obscure crypto platforms and encrypted messaging to obscure the origin of illicit proceeds and move money across borders with limited oversight.

French investigators said collectors gathered €10, €20 and €50 notes from traffickers before converting them into cryptocurrencies, which were later exchanged into cash, often in roubles, after extortion or cyberattack operations.

Authorities argue the case exposes weaknesses in current crypto regulation and the challenges regulators face in policing cross-border digital transactions amid concerns that some funds may have links to Russian networks.

The extradition follows cooperation between US and French authorities, underscoring increasing international efforts to crack down on digital asset laundering and sanction evasion.

The case adds to mounting pressure on crypto exchanges and stablecoin issuers to strengthen compliance controls, with industry participants warning that further scandals could undermine investor confidence if enforcement and transparency measures are not reinforced.
