Australian wage growth remains steady in March
Australian wage growth held firm in the March quarter of 2026, according to the latest data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The wage price index climbed by 0.8% over the three-month period, maintaining a consistent quarterly pace seen since late 2025.

On an annual basis, wages grew by 3.3%, representing a marginal softening from the 3.4% recorded in the December quarter.
Sue-Ellen Luke, the ABS head of prices statistics, noted that while the trajectory remains stable, the dynamics between the public and private sectors are shifting.
For the fifth consecutive quarter, public sector wages outpaced the private sector annually, though the margin has tightened.
Private sector wages rose by 3.2% over the year to March—down slightly from the 3.3% recorded twelve months prior.
Public sector growth cooled to 3.3%, a drop from the 3.6% annual growth seen during the same period last year.
The primary engine behind this growth was the healthcare and social assistance industry, which contributed most significantly to the index with a 0.7% quarterly rise.
Luke attributed this largely to a Commonwealth-funded initiative for the Early Childhood Education and Care workforce, which bolstered private sector pay.
In the public sector, wage increases for Queensland hospital healthcare workers were identified as the leading driver.
