ATO challenges JB Hi-Fi over logo valuation
The Australian Taxation Office has launched a stinging challenge against JB Hi-Fi (ASX:JBH), alleging the electronics giant overvalued The Good Guys’ logo copyright by more than ten times its actual market worth.
The dispute traces back to JB Hi-Fi’s $870 million acquisition of the whitegoods specialist in 2016.
According to Federal Court documents released this month, the retailer attempted to claim $6.1 million in tax deductions over three years, asserting the logo's copyright value sat at $59.3 million.
However, the ATO has capped those deductions at just $425,731, valuing the assets at a mere $4.1 million.
The ATO’s contention centres on a valuation provided by Deloitte, which also serves as JB Hi-Fi’s auditor.
Tax officials argue that the retailer conflated trademark rights and brand goodwill with copyright.
While a brand may possess significant consumer recognition, the ATO maintains that the specific right to reproduce the logo as an "artistic work" holds far less intrinsic value.
This follows a separate EY Australia report that estimated the broader brand value at $241.3 million, a figure the ATO suggests does not justify the specific copyright claims made.
JB Hi-Fi formally disputed the ATO's November 2025 ruling in December, recently flagging the legal challenge to investors.
A spokeswoman for the retailer described the proceedings as a "technical tax matter" and declined further comment.
At the time of reporting, JB Hi-Fi’s share price was $70.19.
