a2 Milk recalls USA infant formula batches
The a2 Milk Company (ASX:A2M) has initiated a voluntary recall of three batches of its a2 Platinum USA label infant milk formula following the detection of cereulide in the product.
Manufactured by Synlait Milk (ASX:SM1), the affected batches comprise approximately 63,078 tins, with an estimated 16,428 already sold to consumers across the United States via Amazon, Meijer stores, and the company’s website.
The issue was identified through rigorous additional testing mandated by updated safety guidelines from the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries.
While the product was manufactured in compliance with standards at the time, a2MC believes the toxin originated from a specific ingredient.
Despite the recall, the company reports no confirmed incidents of illness or harm. Cereulide exposure typically triggers gastrointestinal distress, such as nausea and vomiting, within thirty minutes to six hours of ingestion, with symptoms generally resolving within a day.
The recall is strictly limited to the USA-labelled product; formulations sold in Australia, New Zealand, China, and other Asian markets remain unaffected and safe for consumption.
Although the recall involves a significant number of tins, it represents only about 0.1% of the company's H1 FY26 sales revenue and is not expected to have a material impact on the financial results for either a2MC or Synlait.
