The $3.2 million tuna that stole the New Year

A 243-kilo Pacific bluefin shattered records at Tokyo’s New Year auction, selling for ¥510 million (US$3.2m) at Toyosu Fish Market.
Japan’s “Tuna King,” Kiyoshi Kimura of Kiyomura Corp., paid more than ¥2 million per kilo, a price that reflects brand power as much as premium sushi.
Even so, the headline sale is a small slice of a US$40-plus-billion global tuna industry, leaving one big question about value versus PR.
