The White House said President Donald Trump is discussing a range of options to acquire Greenland, including potential military action.
Acquiring Greenland was described as a national security priority by the White House.
Trump reiterated that the United States “needs” Greenland for security reasons.
The comments came hours after European leaders publicly backed Denmark’s sovereignty over the Arctic territory.
Six European allies said Greenland’s future must be decided only by Denmark and Greenland.
Utilising the US military is always an option at the Commander-in-Chief’s disposal.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
Denmark’s Prime Minister warned that any US attack on Greenland would effectively end Nato.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen welcomed European support and called for respectful dialogue.
The dialogue must take place with respect for the fact that Greenland’s status is rooted in international law.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen said.
US officials said options under discussion include purchasing Greenland or forming a Compact of Free Association.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly told lawmakers the US does not plan to invade the island.
Danish officials said talks with Washington were requested to resolve misunderstandings.
Polls show Greenlanders overwhelmingly oppose becoming part of the United States.
Analysts say the issue has intensified geopolitical tensions across Nato and the Arctic.
