A US immigration agent has fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in Minneapolis.
The Department of Homeland Security said the woman attempted to run over an ICE agent and described the incident as self-defence.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey rejected the federal account, saying:
This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying.
Video footage shared online appears to show agents confronting the driver before shots were fired as the vehicle attempted to move away.
President Donald Trump said an ICE officer was “viciously run over” and blamed the “Radical Left” for targeting law enforcement.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the woman tried to “weaponise her vehicle” and called the act domestic terrorism.
Minneapolis city officials said the woman was helping neighbours and posed no threat at the time of the shooting.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called for an independent investigation and said federal statements were misleading.
Protests erupted across Minneapolis and other US cities, with residents demanding ICE withdraw from the area.
Federal authorities said ICE operations would continue as the FBI investigates the incident.
