England captain Ben Stokes left the field on the fourth morning of the fifth Ashes Test after suffering a right adductor injury at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Stokes bowled 10 balls before pulling up in his follow-through and clutching his groin, forcing him to return to the dressing room.
Vice-captain Harry Brook assumed on-field leadership as Stokes was assessed by medical staff.
Ben Stokes is currently being assessed for a right adductor complaint. We will provide an update when more information is available.
An England statement said.
The injury compounds a difficult tour for England, who lost the Ashes after defeats in the opening three Tests.
England face a battle to avoid a 4-1 series loss after Australia dominated much of the third day in Sydney.
Stokes admitted before the series that winning the Ashes in Australia was a personal ambition that has not materialised.
If this is the way it ends, it is desperately sad. He spoke about his dreams of flying back from here having won the Ashes.
Jonathan Agnew said.
The 34-year-old has struggled with knee, hamstring and shoulder issues and had not completed a full England Test series in recent years.
Stokes has bowled more than 100 overs on the tour, the second-highest workload he has carried in a single series since 2018.
England’s pace attack has been hit hard, with Mark Wood, Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson all sidelined by injuries.
Despite the setback, Stokes has reiterated his intention to continue as England captain through to the 2027 home Ashes.
