Colombian President Gustavo Petro said he believes there is a “real threat” of US military action against his country.
I am asking this very question to all our partners and I have not received a clear, unambiguous answer yet.
Gustavo Petro said.
Petro accused the United States of behaving like an empire and warned Washington risks becoming isolated globally.
He condemned expanded US immigration enforcement, accusing ICE agents of acting like “Nazi brigades”.
Petro’s comments followed remarks by US President Donald Trump suggesting a military operation against Colombia “sounds good”.
Trump and Petro held a phone call this week, which Trump later described as a “Great Honour”.
Despite the call, Petro said relations had not significantly improved and tensions remained high.
Petro said any resolution to the threat depended on continued dialogue between the two countries.
He added Colombia would prioritise dialogue over military confrontation if faced with external aggression.
Protests were held across Colombia following Trump’s remarks, with demonstrators citing sovereignty concerns.
