A BBC investigation found that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor received £15m for Sunninghill Park from a Kazakh oligarch using funds linked to a firm later implicated in corruption.
Kazakh billionaire Timur Kulibayev said through his lawyers that he used a loan from Enviro Pacific Investments to help buy the former prince’s mansion.
Italian prosecutors concluded the company received cash from a bribery scheme in 2007, weeks before the property purchase.
Kulibayev reportedly paid around £3m above the asking price and about £7m more than the home’s estimated market value.
The deal has raised questions over whether the former prince may have inadvertently benefited from the proceeds of crime.
The deal had blatant red flags which should have prompted detailed checks.
Tom Keatinge said.
Kulibayev’s lawyers said he has never engaged in bribery or corruption and that the funds used were legitimate.
Andrew did not respond to the BBC but previously said:
It’s not my business, the second the price is paid.
At the time of the sale, UK officials had warned that allegations of corruption in Kazakhstan were widespread.
