Arizona Senator Mark Kelly said he will fight administrative action announced by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth over his public remarks.
Hegseth accused Kelly’s statements, including a video urging troops not to follow illegal orders, of amounting to sedition.
The defence secretary said a 45-day review process has been launched to potentially reduce Kelly’s military rank and retirement pay.
Hegseth also ordered a formal censure letter to be placed in Kelly’s official military record.
Kelly said the move was an attempt by the Trump administration to suppress free speech among retired service members.
My rank and retirement are things that I earned through my service and sacrifice for this country.
Mark Kelly said.
Kelly cited his combat service, naval aviation career and role as a space shuttle commander in defending his record.
He accused Hegseth of trying to intimidate retired military officers who criticise government actions.
There is nothing more un-American than that.
Mark Kelly said.
Kelly said he would not be intimidated by threats to his rank or pension.
The senator said he plans to challenge the action to defend broader rights to dissent.
The Pentagon confirmed it opened an investigation into Kelly in November.
